Take modern Unicode copy and push it back into a layout that still runs on DevLys. Matra and reph ordering is reversed so the text types correctly once the font is applied.
New copy, old layout file
Somebody wrote the text in Unicode because that is what phones and email do. The layout it has to go into was built years ago with DevLys attached to every paragraph style. Rebuilding the layout is a project. Converting the text is a paste.
That handoff is what this page handles. Paste the Unicode, take the DevLys keystrokes, drop them into the layout with the font applied.
Four things to know
- Apply the font first. Until DevLys is set, the output reads as English letters. That is correct behaviour, not a fault.
- Formatting does not travel. Characters convert, styles do not. Bold, italics and paragraph settings need reapplying.
- Check the conjuncts. Rare clusters are where errors hide. Give क्ष त्र ज्ञ श्र and any stacked forms a look before the file goes to print.
- Mixed English is fine. English words in the source pass through unchanged in this direction, which is usually what you want.
If your layout uses Kruti Dev instead
The keystrokes produced here are identical to what a Unicode to Kruti Dev converter gives you, because the two families share the Remington layout. Only the drawn shape of the letters differs. So if you discover halfway through that the layout is actually Kruti Dev, the output still works. Nothing needs redoing.
Unicode to DevLys
Is the output the same as Unicode to Kruti Dev?
For standard Hindi, yes. DevLys and Kruti Dev put the same Devanagari glyph on the same ASCII code, so the keystrokes match. Only the visual style of the letterforms differs between the two fonts.
The result looks like English. What went wrong?
Nothing at all. Legacy fonts store Hindi as ASCII, so Devanagari only appears once you apply DevLys 010 in your document or layout application.
Will my formatting survive?
No. This converts characters only. Paragraph styles, bold, italics and table structure have to be set again in your layout.
Can I import a Word file?
Yes, .docx and .txt both work. The file is read in the browser and nothing is uploaded anywhere.
